My family (that I married into!) highly recommends Hickory Flat Animal Hospital. We have been with this animal hospital and it's veterinarians since around 1996, essentially when they opened. We've been through multiple vet changeovers with them.

I've been to a multitude of vets, from before I got married and with friends, with pets that I sat while their owner was on vacation or when you're talking emergency vets or trying to get an appointment on that rare occasion when the times HFAH didn't have availability for a routine visit. No one has provided care as good as what we get at Hickory Flat. Every single penny we pay is absolutely worth it, from the veterinarian techs to the vets, these people care about us and our pets.

There has never been an occasion when we have had an emergency or an emergent condition and they haven't squeezed us in.

The staff (most of the techs, btw, have been consistently there over the years. You can tell a lot about a business from how the leadership treats their staff. The fact that so many of the techs have remained over the decades reflects highly on them) absolutely cares about our animals and cares for animals in general. They are kind and compassionate. As you can imagine, having been with them for nearly 30 years, they've been with us when we've lost a lot of animals, especially since almost every animal we've had has been a rescue. They support us completely and when they know you and your animal and your pet has an ongoing condition (we adopt a lot of chronic condition pets), they don't require you to come in and have an appointment to get a prescription, they just make sure you get what you need. They always let you know about costs, concerns and options.

We have never, ever had a bad experience with them. In fact, there are so many outstanding experiences that it's hard to just narrow down one to share. I will however share one more. One of our cats (who was vaccinated) managed to get feline leukemia anyway when she snuck outside. We were unaware until she showed signs of incredible illness all of a sudden. She was still eating/drinking and trying to play but you could tell she was very much not okay. We took her to the emergency vet who diagnosed her with the disease and recommended that we euthanize her. (She needed a blood transfer and such). Given the way the cat was otherwise behaving, we refused that option and brought her to Hickory Flat once they were open on Monday. They confirmed the diagnosis and helped us get our girl stabilized. Once she was stabilized, she lived a very happy life for over a decade after that without issue. She didn't need to be put down, she just needed the underlying infection that was exacerbating the leukemia to be treated and then ongoing special care to manage the leukemia. She died of old age, not the leukemia. We've had animals with leukemia, herpes, cancer, diabetes, kidney failure, etc. etc. and they have always worked with us. Absent incurable things (like one of our dogs had an inoperable brain tumor), our pets live long lives in partnership with HFAF. Most of our cats live to upper teens or low 20s. Our dogs tend to live past their breed averages. This is absolutely because of how HFAH works with us and helps us provide the best care for our beloved furry family members. When we lose them, even if it happens outside of HFAF, they mourn with us and offer donations up in our pets' names.

Bottom line, if you want an animal hospital that you can trust with caring, compassionate people who love animals, I cannot recommend Hickory Flat enough. The only way we're picking another vet is if they close or we have to move too far away for it to be practical. Everyone there is worth every penny we spend.
